A lovely creamy homemade custard that is perfect to pour over sponge puds and fruit crumbles.

1/2 pt milk
2oz sugar
2 egg yolks
2 level tsp cornflour
grating of nutmeg
1 Bay leaf

Heat the milk in a small pan with the bay leaf and nutmeg. In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks, sugar, and cornflour together until smooth. Gradually stir the hot milk into egg mixture, put back into the pan and heat gently until the custard thickens. The custard should coat the back of a wooden spoon when it is ready.
